Book Review - Writing Wild by Kathryn Aalto
Writing Wild: Women Poets, Ramblers, and Mavericks Who Shape How We See the Natural World is an anthology to reclaim the voice of women in connection to nature, and Mother Earth herself. For too long, the patriarchy has diminished and pushed the work, observations, and role of women to the fringes when it comes to Nature. Women were supposed to stay inside, and leave the exploration and unearthing to the men.
However, women have always been integrated and involved in Nature. Our evolution has had women at the forefront, yet forced out of the spotlight when forming opinions or analyses. This book brings their image, identity, place, and point in time to the table. We have women from different centuries, walks of life, ethnicities, ages, and classes. Different stories, yet still of the same substance.
A wonderful anthology (yet still only scratching the surface), this book allows us to connect to the voices of women who have helped shape our relationship with nature. This book helps us reclaim our own sliver of wildness. A must-read book. Five out of five stars.
